South Bay Opti-Mrs. Announced a Charity Table Setting Contest in 1959

“An Invitation to Creativity”is offered to the clubwomen of the South Bay area by the South Bay Opti-Mrs. in their first annual Table Setting set for Nov. 7, between the hours of 11 a.m. and 9 p.m., at the centrally located National City Community Building on 12th street. Benefit event will be a highlight of winter social calendar. According to Mrs. Betty Hall, president of the South Bay OptiMrs:, bids to compete in the club's Table Setting Contest are ready for mailing to presidents of clubs in the South Bay area. Because of space limitations the number of entries will be restricted to 30 with applications to be considered on an “accept as received to absolute 30-no more basis.” Judges are being selected; more detailed information will be announced via the press between now and Nov. 7

Categories for which applications will be received for the Nov. 7 competition are: (1) Formal, (2) Informal, and (3) Patio. Clubs entering a table setting have the prerogative of choosing any theme decor which they wish using to the best advantage their china, crystal, silver, table linen, flowers and other fitting appointments. Their decor may convey the idea of any season or holiday, and the final judging will be made upon the completed table setting and its all-around effectiveness from attractiveness and excellence of taste criteria.

A jury of competent judges will decide which of the competing table settings is superior in each of the three defined categories. The judging will be be tween 11 a.m. and noon Nov. 7. The event or season depicted may in a large measure deter mine the particular category in to which the given table setting will fall. For instance, if a given South Bay club chooses to enter a beautifully appointe
d bride's table, this table setting in all likelihood will fall into the formal category for judging purposes.

Each club president who wishes to enter her club's “creative effort” in the Nov. 7 table setting contest is requested to mail her organization's application blank to either Mrs. Mildred Smith, Paradise Hills, or Mrs. Betty Hall, National City. The table setting contest entries following official judging will be on public view Nov. 7, between the hours of 12 noon and 9 p.m., at a nominal charge to the spectator. All monies derived from the competition will benefit the girls’ work fund of South Bay Opti-Mrs. Public support is solicited in behalf of this challenging, original benefit event. Only with the wholehearted support of clubs in he South Bay, area will it suceed! Club presidents watch for those application blanks which will reach you soon via the mail! – National City Star News, 1959
